End-of-cruise casino comps
On the last night or two, casino hosts deliver certificates for future cruises, top up free play or take charges off your bill. Here's what each line gives, how it's worked out, and why losing a lot doesn't by itself earn you more.
End-of-cruise rewards are based on how much you played, measured in points that stand in for your theoretical loss, not on how much you lost. Onboard certificates on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess and MSC count only the sailing you're on; offers emailed later draw on your wider history.
No mainstream line publishes a loss rebate or how generous it is, so most charts here are reported by players and hosts. Get rated every time, know your line's cutoff, and book certificates before they expire, usually within about 30 days.
Terms with a dotted underline are explained when you tap or select them.
How it's calculated
Every line bases end-of-cruise rewards on how much you played, not how much you lost. That play is measured as points, which stand in for your theoretical loss, or theo.
Theo, in one line
theo = amount wagered × house edge (The casino's built-in advantage: the share of each bet it expects to keep over the long run. For slots it's called the hold.)On slots, lines simplify this to points per dollar wagered. On tables, a supervisor rates your average bet and time. One example: about 10 points an hour at $10–$15 blackjack on Royal Caribbean. No cruise line publishes how much of your theo it gives back, but CDC Gaming reports about 20% is typical for casinos.
This cruise vs. your history
Onboard certificates (Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, MSC) count only the points from the sailing you're on. Offers that arrive by email after the cruise draw on your wider history, which MSC calls your Player Rating.
We found no mainstream line that publishes a loss rebate. A big actual loss doesn't earn comps on its own; the same play earns the same reward whether you won or lost.
A worked example
$1 a spin, 600 spins an hour, 2 hours a day for 5 days: $6,000 wagered, about $480 of theo at an 8% hold (The share of money played that the casino keeps over time: 100% minus the payback. It's the slot version of the house edge.). Here's how that play counts on each line. The points are our arithmetic; the rewards are what each source reports.
| Line | Points from this play | What the reported charts say |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Caribbean | 1,200 ($5 a point) | 400 points = $100 off a future cruise; 4,000 in one voyage = free balcony + $500 FreePlay (Promotional credit you play through a machine rather than cash out directly. Play paid for with it doesn't earn points on most lines.) (host, 2025). Players report lower value since March 2026. |
| Princess | 3,000 ($2 a point) | 3,000 points = free interior + $100 FreePlay on cruises up to 7 days (reported chart). |
| MSC | 2,000 ($3 a point) | About 2,000–5,000 points = discount certificate; 7,000–10,000 = free interior (fan site estimates). |
| Carnival | 3,000 ($2 a point) | Free-cabin offers typically need about 7,000–10,000 points a cruise (one writer's experience). |
| Celebrity | 1,200 ($5 a point) | Instant Cruise Rewards are based on this sailing's play, but the chart isn't published. |
| Virgin Voyages | 1,200 ($5 a point) | Onboard certificates for a Sea Terrace cabin start around 8,000 points (reported). |
Princess's and MSC's charts are reported, not published, and Princess's earning rate is reported as $2 or $2.50 a point. Real results swing widely: on a sample this small, you could finish well up or well down, but your points would be the same. See the math behind casino games.
Line by line
| Line | What you can get at the end of a cruise | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Caribbean | Instant Reward Certificates (IRCs) (Royal Caribbean's onboard certificates, worked out from the points earned on that sailing, for money off or a free future cruise.) based only on this sailing's points: 400 points = $100 off, 4,000 = free balcony + $500 FreePlay (host, 2025). Since December 2024, offers of 2,000 points or less are free for one guest with the second discounted. Players report lower value since March 2026. A $200 NextCruise deposit can unlock extra FreePlay on select sailings. | Printed on the second-to-last day and delivered on the last. Book within about 30 days; the line "isn't very forgiving" about expired certificates. |
| Celebrity | Instant Cruise Rewards based on this sailing's play (chart not published). Reward Points convert to FreePlay or, from 10,000 points, onboard expense credit for dining, shopping, spa and more. Reported rate: 50 points = $1 FreePlay. | Reward Points expire at the end of each sailing. |
| Carnival | Host discretion by play level: spa treatments, dinners, drinks and logo items. Free-cabin offers reportedly need about 7,000–10,000 points a cruise. Reported | Some players report onboard bounce-back offers have stopped. Reported |
| Norwegian | Pearl and up can redeem points toward spa, specialty dining, play or the final bill. One NCL footnote says folio redemption is currently only on Oceania and Regent, so confirm on board. | Redeem on the last day, 6–9 p.m. Unredeemed points last 18 months. |
| MSC | Last-night certificates from this sailing's Dream Points: roughly 2,000–5,000 for a discount, 7,000–10,000 for a free interior, 15,000+ for balcony or Yacht Club. Hosts sometimes add dining, Wi-Fi or drinks below a formal level. Fan site estimates | Delivered on the final night. Usually book within 30–60 days. "Free" doesn't include gratuities. |
| Princess | A Sea You Soon offer is generated automatically: a discount, FreePlay or a free cruise, by cruise length. | Play counts until 11:59 p.m. on the second-to-last night. Book within 30 days; sail within 6 months. |
| Holland America | Private offers that can include FreePlay, drinks, spa treatments, wine with dinner, and free or discounted cabins. | Not published. |
| Virgin Voyages | The host can cover onboard charges "when your gaming activity justifies it," but one player with 4,000+ points got nothing comped. Superstar and up get $100–$300 FreePlay per voyage. | Certificate deposits of $200 come back as FreePlay on the next cruise (reported). |
| Margaritaville | No documented end-of-cruise certificate. Perks come through Players Club tiers instead. | Reward Points expire after 90 days. |
| Explora | None. There's no casino program. | — |
Which lines give more?
No line publishes how generous it is, and everything below comes from individual players and bloggers. Treat it as anecdote, not a ranking.
- Royal CaribbeanPlayers report lower cabin categories, less FreePlay and lower value per point on instant certificates since around March 2026.
- PrincessHosts are described as "strictly by the book," but the reported chart gives a free interior at 3,000 points, a low bar for a 7-day cruise.
- MSCComps reportedly come more easily on US and Caribbean sailings than in Europe.
- NorwegianOne forum poster: "They used to be more generous."
- Virgin VoyagesOnboard charge comps aren't guaranteed, even with thousands of points.
- CelebrityThe 2024 revamp swapped automatic tier FreePlay for Effy credit and dropped drink packages; Celebrity admitted it didn't roll the changes out well.
Our read: per-sailing programs (Princess, MSC, Royal Caribbean's instant certificates) reward one big cruise, while annual tiers (Club Royale, Blue Chip, Casinos At Sea, Sea Roller) reward frequent cruisers. Use the finder to see which fits your pattern.
Getting the most from the host
- Get rated every timePut your card in the machine or hand it to the dealer before you buy in. Unrated play (Play the casino doesn't record against your account: no card in the machine, or no card given to the dealer before you play.) earns nothing.
- Visit the host desk on day oneAsk for the onboard chart (Royal Caribbean has a QR code), check your drink status and confirm your table ratings.
- Check in mid-cruiseAsk how many points you have and what the next level needs.
- Know the cutoffPrincess counts play until the second-to-last night, Royal Caribbean prints on the second-to-last day, and NCL redemption is 6–9 p.m. on the last day.
- Book before it expiresMost certificates must be booked within about 30 days, not sailed.
- Keep recordsPhotograph certificates, keep your final folio (Your onboard account: the running list of charges and credits on your cruise card.) and request a win/loss statement for your tax records.
- Price it honestlyChasing the next level usually costs more in expected losses than the extra reward is worth. Set a budget first.
